Our Vision for Mathematics Learning

There can be no doubt about the importance and beauty of mathematics in God’s world. At the Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board, we believe that all students deserve high-quality math experiences so they can learn to see and appreciate the wonders of creation.

Our goal is to help students develop confidence, curiosity, and a positive attitude toward learning mathematics. Students are encouraged to show their thinking in multiple ways, using tools and representations authentically to develop deep, conceptual understanding so they learn why math works, not just how to get the right answer.

Students learn strategies to build mathematical reasoning so they can work accurately, efficiently, and flexibly. Our classrooms are places of trust and belonging, where students are encouraged to ask questions, make mistakes, and learn from them. They talk with each other about their thinking and learn that effort and perseverance matter.

How Parents and Caregivers Can Help

Speaking positively about math, playing games and puzzles together, and talking about how you use math in daily life are some of the best ways to help children develop a curious and confident approach to learning mathematics.

To build and reinforce an appreciation for the beauty of math, notice and talk about how mathematics appears in nature, architecture, and technology. Point out patterns, shapes, measurements, and numbers in the world around you.

Mathematics helps us make sense of the world God has created and when children see math as meaningful and connected to real life, they are more likely to enjoy learning it.
